When it comes to hot water in your home, you've probably taken it for granted more than once. But what happens when your gas hot water isn't working properly and may need repair? We've rounded up some of the more common instant gas hot water system problems that we hope will help you.
Instant gas hot water systems go by a range of names, including:
Instantaneous gas hot water system
Instant gas hot water system
Continuous flow gas hot water system
On-demand gas hot water system
They are usually small and located on the wall, heating water as needed rather than heating and then storing. They are also one of the most efficient hot water systems, if not the most efficient.
How Do Instant Gas Hot Water Systems Work?
Instantaneous gas hot water systems, as the name suggests, run on gas, and their function is to push cold water through copper pipes (called heat exchangers), applying heat directly to it.
When you turn on the hot water tap, the flow sensor in your instant gas hot water system activates and starts heating. This triggers the gas burner and the desired amount of water is heated to the desired temperature and flows into your tap. Then, when you turn off the tap, your hot water system shuts off too!
Most Common Problems with Tankless Gas Hot Water Systems
Indicator Light Will Not Light Up
If you find that your water heater light won't come on, remember that instant systems require moderate to high water flow to light the light. So, run the faucet on high for a few minutes and see if the light comes on.
Sporadic Hot and Cold Water
Intermittent hot and cold water is a common problem with instantaneous systems. This can be caused by a number of factors, including:
The diaphragm on the gas meter may be faulty.
There may not be enough gas entering your hot water system (this may be caused by an undersized cylinder).
There may be a problem with your shower head or restrictor, which could affect the ability of the faucet to be registered as a "hot water" faucet.
Your system may have low hot water pressure.
Warm Water
Another problem that can arise is warm water coming out of the pipes instead of hot water. This could be caused by a faulty thermostat or the diaphragm may need to be replaced.
Reduced Water Production
If you find that your hot water system is producing less water than it should, or that the water pressure is lower than it used to be, this could be due to:
The filter valve on the cold inlet may be clogged.
The thermostat may be broken or faulty
If the water also comes out at a lower pressure, this may have something to do with the light. But remember, momentary units provide hot water at a lower pressure than the storage system!
No Hot Water at All
Finally, if you don't have hot water, there are a few things you can check before calling in a hot water plumber.
Check the stove or other gas appliance to see if gas is still flowing into it. If yes, then the gas supply is not the problem - if not, there is a good chance you have found the problem. If you don't see any gas flowing to other appliances, check your gas valve gauge and call your local utility provider for further assistance.
Double-check that the continuous flow is plugged into its electrical outlet.
If your system has a controller, check that it is turned on and the temperature is set to an appropriate level.
