If you have a gas water heater but no hot water, you may be wondering how to light your water heater. In some cases, your water heater may be in perfect condition and the light just goes out. In this blog, we will discuss some of the steps and considerations to take when igniting a gas water heater.
1. Turn off the Gas to the Gas Water Heater and Open the Indicator Access Door/cover
First, turn off the gas to the water heater for about 5 minutes.
Then, check your owner's manual to locate the indicator access door or cover and open it.
This is usually just below the gas valve.
2. Find the Burner Inside the Gas Water Heater
You will need a flashlight or headlight to identify the indicator burner. You will see two small windpipes leading to it.
3. Turn the Gas Knob of the Gas Water Heater to "pilot"
In some water heaters, this can be done with a separate button, usually red, that you need to hold while the indicator light is on.
4. Turn on the Gas Water Heater Indicator
Some units may have an ignition button. If this is the case, use it. This usually creates a small electrical short, igniting the pilot light.
If your device doesn't have this, you can use a long gas grill lighter or a long grill match. Do not try to use a short cigarette lighter or matches, or you may burn yourself.
While holding down the pilot button or keeping the gas knob on, carefully place the flame near the pilot light.
Continue to keep the knob or gas valve open for at least one minute after the light is fully illuminated. Release slowly to make sure the light is still on.
5. Fully Turn on the Gas of the Gas Water Heater
Fully turn the gas back on to the gas water heater and listen for a "whoosh" or "whoosh" from the main burner.
If you've ever used a gas grill or fireplace, this will be familiar.
6. Replacing the Pilot Light Access Door or Cover of the Gas Water Heater
Completely close or replace the indicator access door or cover. Your lights are fully on - you just learned how to light a gas water heater!
The indicator light can be extinguished by natural changes in gas pressure, but if the indicator light keeps going out, it could mean there is a problem such as a bent or dirty thermocouple, a method that detects flame interruption and automatically shuts off the gas in the event of a failure The small device light off.
